Good, Better, Best: 3 Ways to Dress a Window

We all have different needs, desires and budgets when it comes to any purchase we make, particularly with luxury items.

The above are all lovelies for sure, but the reality is, most of us are not driving a Porsche, will never wear Christian Lecroix - though, I must pause: ...can you stand that skirt detail? Starting my career in fashion and apparel, I literally skip a breath every time I look at it - and we probably will never even see Christopher Michael Shellis' diamond-studded sandals, let alone wear them.

I'm not sure about you, but I'm ok with that! I drive an SUV, don't have anywhere to go to wear the dress and at 5'10", with a size-11 foot, I'm pretty confident I wouldn't do those sandals justice, aesthetically or functionally. This does not mean I must forgo lovelies all together though. A good-looking car, beautiful dress and great shoes still fit in to my life, just from a different vantage and budget point.

GO NAKED?
Your home is much the same. Great design, home decor and window dressings have a definite element of luxury, in addition to their place in the functional+neccesity category. Too many times though, I see homeowners qualifying purchases of furniture, home accessories and window treatments in the luxury category only - aka, "I can push this off", causing them to do nothing.

Why is this so? I think it's because it's easy to fall to the thought, "who has the time?".  Purchasing window treatments, thinking about working with a designer or decorator, knowing where to buy quality furniture - let alone WHAT to buy and HOW to select pieces that will "play nice" together - are illusive to most. Because these are purchases that homeowners rarely make, occurring only once a decade for many [sadly]; people feel they just don't the time or energy to invest in making sure change happens.

The result: naked windows, or even worse, windows dressed for the sake of dressing them! Remember my window contest? That is what I'm talking about!

CAN YOU COMPROMISE?
There are often two things needed when making any big investment: flexibility and compromise! Good design can be achieved within any budget but you have to understand at the start that - as with any investment worth making - some things may have to be put off, substituted or forgone completely.
When your looking at a new car and you ask if they can drop the payments, what happens? That's right, there goes the leather interior, the sunroof and the heated seats.  You can still get a great car though, you just have to compromise.
The same is true for your window treatments. You may already know what you want but you just don't feel you can get there, on your own. The most common thing I hear from clients is that they, "have no idea what window treatments even cost." That is no surprise because the answer is not a simple one. Window treatments can really vary, depending on the size, function and design you need and like, the materials chosen to fabricate with and the hardware of choice.

BALLPARKING
On average, I tell clients that an average size window [less than 40" wide] of average height [84" length from top to floor] can realistically be ball-parked at $1,500 to $2,000 a window. Yes, it can go higher and it also can go lower. Either progression, up or down, results from a change in materials or design.

Let me show you  how a window can be dressed on any budget! I'm starting with the inspiration image from Fabricut, [drapes only]. It's close, client loves the scale of the pattern and the coloring generally, though wishes for a warmer gold (not so yellow) and does not want any birds in the print.

Best: Maxwell/Telafina, Topanga, Azure, 100% Silk Taffeta

Better: Corbin, Opal, 100% Cotton Damask

Good: Mingei, Bristol, 100% Cotton, Screen print on 7oz. cotton

HARDWARE
I never recommend skimping on hardware, you have to maintain a level of quality because (1) you want the hardware to be substantial enough to hold up the weight of your treatments and (2) hardware is an investment that often times can become an additional architectural element in a room. It would be a rare, rare day for me to ever recommend you purchase off-the-rack hardware from a Home Depot or Lowes. If that must ocur, I strongly suggest the use of more substantial brackets and better quality screws.

Best: Helser Brothers [please excuse the mis-match; showing as sample only]
Helser Brothers makes beautiful hand-forged iron hardware. Their "workhorse" Artigiani collection has a great 1-3/4" smooth pole, with exceptional feature that it can go 108" wide without a center support. It's that durable! That, to me, is worth it's weight in gold!

Better: Kirsch[please excuse the mis-match; showing as sample only]
Kirsch has been around a long, long time and I always feel confident suggesting and using their product. I love their wrought iron collection for quality, price and style. A couple drawbacks: the rods only come 4, 6 and 8 ft. in length so a splice is often necessary. I don't mind the center support, but I don't love to have to splice a rod in the center.

Good: House Parts  [please excuse the mis-match; showing as sample only]
House Parts really has a lot to offer for the price point they fit in. If I am working on a project with budget concerns, they offer some pieces I've had some luck with.

WHERE DOES THIS LEAVE YOU?
There are ways to get the look you want, you just have to figure out where you can, and are, willing to compromise. Everyone should look forward to going home; it should be the place that brings you beauty, security, rest and comfort.

I've already talked about many facets of design: bringing harmony into your home, tips for furniture selection and important elements of Feng shui to ensure relaxing and healthy environments. Today, I want you to look at your windows. How do they make you feel?

I have provided the scenarios in this post to illustrate the many variables that contribute to the cost of custom window treatments. Each are based on a 38" - 40" window with single-width drapery panels at approximately 84" in length.

Please, keep in mind, that I'm not in any way saying that the "Best" and the "Good" category will give you the same exact look; they will not. No matter how well I fabricate, I can never get a 7oz. cotton to drape the same as a beautifully lined and interlined silk panel. Likewise, the damask also has a softer hand which will show in the draping of the fabric. Compromise is exactly that, compromise!

You will decide what is right for you and what look you ultimately would like to have, but isn't it nice to know there are options?

I hope this has helped you to think about how you can be creative with your interiors and has you ready to get started creating the Style Your Home Deserves!

Bubble-Wrap Window Treatments? Let's Talk!

Ok, peeps, fess up, where have you seen something like this before? Gotta admit, I find it hysterical... for a comic strip that is. I would not find it amusing if I actually saw it hanging in someones house.

My guess is this is a concept born out of a frat house. You agree?

Tomorrow morning we will be talking about Budget Creativity for Window Treatments. I promise you though, we will not be recommending you string together bottlecaps, braid old cassette-tape ribbon or using bubble wrap in lieu of sheers. All novel concepts but just not the look any of us should be going for.

Please share with me here, in the comments below, the most ingenious window treatments you have ever seen and join us tomorrow morning (1/23/12), and every Monday, on Twitter so we can share great ideas for creativity with others!

See you then!

Decorative Trims: Beaded Bedazzlements

Can you tell I had trouble coming up with a great title for this post? Got you this far though, so I guess I did pretty well. Now, the trick is to have you keep reading. Please, let me bedazzle you with a bit about beads.

Is it just me or do you agree, that beads add something special and have a way of captivating the eye? Wherever you find them, beaded trims add softness and feminine, elegant appeal. I had a young client in not long ago and she immediately walked over to a treatment and said, "I really love this... is that tacky?" Absolutely not! Another very young client was too cute, as I showed her fabrics she kept turning around and looking behind her in the studio. Finally, after I was done she said, "can I have one of those with the beads on it?" From the minute she walked in, it had captured her attention.

If you've been following the blog, you already know that yes, I love trim, and in that category is beaded trim. If you go through my shop, you'll see many, but in case you have not I pulled some pretties on over here.

When done up to the nines on grand scale, beading can be flashy and glamorous. Lucky for you, you don't have to don the beading and fringe a la 1920s fashion if it's not your thing. Your home is a great place to take some risks -- small or large -- and try out some jewelry-like design elements to suit your style, that can be anywhere from quiet to ostentatious, you decide.

The trim on these pillows fits the "quiet" appeal, I think, especially so as done in subtle tonal hues. They create such a soft, almost ethereal, and definitely feminine look. They'd be pretty plain-Jane without the trim, don't you agree?

Samuel & Sons (Lori Weitzner)

I love, love, love beaded trim on the lead-edge of drapes [yes, that is the lingo for the edge of the drapery that faces the center of the window... lead edge]! They provide an excellent contrast to the visual weight of the tassel tieback and add a little brightness and lightness. This photo is another image from one of the most delightful showrooms in New York: Samuel and Sons. For you non-sewing readers, their showroom brings to me, the equivalent of a "kid in a candy store" feeling! Take away the trim changes the whole feel, in my opinion, immediately making the drapes more masculine and weighty. And I am absolutely in love with the trim that the Canadian, Studio La Beaute used on the ivory panel below. Elegance defined!

I can hear your "Wowww" over here, as you scroll your eyes over this next image. It's fantastic, isn't it? I can immediately think of about seven clients who are going crazy over this right now. It's a fabulous creation from Sonya Hamilton Interiors. The flat braid trim paired with the beading adds the perfect complement to the fabric [awesome on its own; beyond awesome with the contrast!]. This wouldn't work as well if it weren't for the solid chocolate fabric above the trim. What feels whimsical and fun would probably feel a lot busier with all pattern.

Here's a space designed by Phoebe Howard in a waterfront home. I love the addition of wooden bead trim on the bottom edge of the valance to add an earthy appeal. I know its difficult to see it clearly, but I think you can tell enough that the trim is just enough to break all that pattern.

So what do you think? Is it high time we bedazzle some goodies in your home with beaded trim? Is it something you'd like to try? The great thing about beading is that it can added to treatments or pillows you already have, whether custom or ready-made, creating a truly unique look. Let's go for it! I'd love to help you jazz things up a bit!

Saving Relationships: Tip #1 for Installing Drapery Hardware

Besides hanging up wall-paper or putting up a Christmas tree, what are some other home projects that put a strain on a relationship? Cleaning ceiling fans and windows ranks at the top too. But what about installing drapery hardware?  Yes indeed, that is a biggie! Avoidance is often activated after the words, "honey, can you help me hang the curtains?" rings through the house.  It is amazing the sudden list of to-do's that suddenly appear... anything is better than hanging curtain rods, right?

I have some tips though that can take the stress out of the project; heck, these tips are so good, they could possibly be responsible for "saving relationships".
"This seems like it should be something anyone can do!
I'm irrationally angry! So much that I'm over-punctuating!!"
This is probably one of the funniest frustration-based comments I've ever heard.  It came from an installation gone wrong, but at the same timecan we not relate to Thin Lizzy?  Installation does seem like it should be easy but guess what? .... Easy is most often not the case.

Here's a quick tip though that is bound to make the job easier and gosh, who knows, maybe even a little-bit enjoyable?

Tip #1:  Make a TEMPLATE to mark holes!

Especially when there are many windows, making a template can save you a ton of time and spare you a lot of stress. Instead of measuring down and marking at every window, try this:

We have measured down from the crown molding to our desired height and marked the holes for our first bracket. Note, we have PRE-DRILLED the holes (yes, that will be a future tip with its own post).
Because we are securing our brackets into horsehair walls and we are not hitting studs, we are going to use anchors. (Ahh, another future post given away...)
Tap these lightly into the wall. If you are having difficulty then the hole you drilled may be too small.  You should not have to tap too hard to get this into place.
Once you have the anchors in place.... well, here it is.. the tip you've all been waiting for .......
Make a template!!
Either out of paper or poster board or even plastic; it just has to be something that will remain straight & stable but you can also feel through.  Put that in place so that it goes from the top of the ceiling line - or in this case, the bottom edge of the crown molding - and atleast all the way down to the window frame.
Feel through the paper/poster board and mark the center of each anchor.  Poke through those marks.
Use this template to mark the placement of anchors on all the other windows.  Hold the template up to the bottom of the crown molding and then, using a pen, mark through the holes to the wall.  You now have "pre-measured" markings where you will pre-drill and place anchors for your brackets.
Well, that is my fabulous tip for this week!  I know its seems overly simple but it is amazing how few think about it.  It's a lot easier to measure once, mark the holes, then pop the template into place, pen-dot, pen-dot and then pre-drill all at once, rather than measuring and marking every time.

Hope this helps you get through the next job with less of a struggle!

I'd love to know what installation issues have you stumped?  Let me know and I'll be sure to include in my tips or installation tutorials.

The Essential Elements of Spa-tacular Bathrooms

Longing for a day at the spa? The type of place, “Calgon, take me away” infers? Well, most of us are not able to pamper ourselves at a spa every day, but you can create a luxurious bathroom that will help you relax, refresh and feel like you've taken a little escape.
From a tight budget to an extravagant remodel, there are many options to create a spa-like retreat.
First, clean out the clutter. You don't see bottles and products littering the counters in a spa, so take that cue and organize and find accessible, yet hidden, spots for the things that are necessary.
Some "Spa-tacular" features to consider:
  • A steam-shower, whirlpool or jacuzzi tub. Though expensive, it’s one of the most impressive changes you can make. You'll look forward to relaxing soaks in the evening after a long day. If you are putting in a shower, consider a full glass door to keep things ope, maximizing the visual perception of the space.
  • Natural stones and tile. Beautiful stone tile immediately evokes images the beauty of our natural surroundings; peaceful and serene.
Master Bathroom & Vanity modern bathroom
  • A gorgeous marble looks shiny and pristine, especially when kept in an all white color scheme.
  • Quality or custom cabinetry.  There are numerous options in vanity styles, from furniture-styles that resemble antique bureaus to contemporary and modern designs. The key is to be sure it works functionally and aesthetically. You may or may not need to be sure it has storage space for all of the accoutrement that would otherwise take up counter top space.
  • Lighting. Use soft lighting and as much natural light as possible.  No one looks or feels wonderful under bright, overhead lighting.  Install a dimmer and use sconces to light the mirror.  Adding a couple candles or even a small crystal chandelier can add ambiance.

Renovations and construction not in the plans? There are many ways to create a spa-inspired bathroom that do not involve major changes to your space.  For a little money and a little effort, you can do a variety of projects that will give your bathroom a new look.
  • Paint!  A fresh coat of paint can give your bathroom a completely different feel.  Choose soothing colors such as warm neutrals, clean whites, and pretty pastels.  If you would prefer color to neutral, choose nature inspired greens and blues or flattering pinks and purples. The all white look is also always fabulous (as you can see from many of the photos).
  • Frame your face! The mirror is one of the most important elements in the bathroom and believe it or not, changing this one feature can have huge impact. Ditch your frameless mirror for something with a little more character.  Your mirror will take on the feel of a wonderful piece of art and create a whole new look in the space.  You can also simply make a trip to the hardware store for four pieces of wood molding and create a frame around your existing mirror. Remodelaholic had an excellent guest post showing a before and after bathroom transformation that did just that!
Hollywood Glamour traditional powder room
  • How will your feet feel? Comfortable rugs will make a huge difference in your morning routine.  Find a plush rug that pads your feet or go for a lovely rug you might not ordinarily think of putting in a bathroom.  Go for the unexpected and use the rug that makes a stylish impression.
  • Storage. Utilize interesting baskets and storage pieces.  Those items that must reside out in the open will look far prettier in baskets, cubbies or attractive storage containers than splayed across the counter.  Hand towels also look nice displayed in a small basket next to the sink.

  • Seating. If you have a bench area, great but most bathrooms do not.  Bring in a small upholstered chair.  It makes a great statement piece - and of course, inevitably creates the perfect stashing spot for a change of clothes, a stack of towels - besides its true purpose... a place to park yourself!
  • Consider a new set of towels.  Let's face it, there is nothing worse than stepping out of the shower and grabbing a towel that feels anything but wonderful.  Thick plush cottons, velours or waffle-weaves.  Invest in some luxurious towels that not only look great but FEEL great! You may even want to think about a new plush terry robe for the true spa experience.

  • Don't forget the details!  Fresh flowers, scented candles, or a relaxing CD can make all the difference when you are staying in for an evening of pampering or in your daily routine.
  • Pretty and Private.  Did you notice the window treatments in most of these shots? Privacy is the obvious consideration, but don't just think of function.  In addition to a functional shade or shutter, consider window treatments that are soft, breezy and easy-care to add to the airy appeal.  Linen-looks, cottons and some poly's are perfect options.  And for style: relaxed roman shades, cafe curtains, or simple panels will provide both, simplicity and style.
